Sprites from other Planets May Be Helpful in Finding Extraterrestrial Life

Sprites are atmospheric electricity (lasting 10 msec) appearing as globular flashes of red (pink to blood-red) light rising to heights of 60 miles (sometimes seen together with elves). They are common on Earth and but never been well documented because they are well up high that weather balloons can’t reach. They are high-altitude offshoots of lightning events closer to the ground. Lighting is not only observed many times on Earth but also on other planets in the solar system.

Earthlike lightning has been observed in Venus while Jupiter and Saturn have been observed to experience a thousand times more powerful lightning than Earth.

A team of researchers recreated other planetary atmospheres in studying the occurrence of alien sprites. They used chemical mixtures similar to the atmosphere of Jupiter, Saturn and Venus and made electrical circuits in simulating lightning. The team’s objectives are to know how sprites would be created and what they would look like on other worlds.

Sprites are associated to lightning and according to various theories, including paranormal beliefs, lightning plays a big role in the development of first life on Earth. Many scientists believe that the presence of sprites on other planets (both within and outside the solar system) may be something to explore and investigate when looking for evidence of extraterrestrial life.

Sprites would also be used to examine what kinds of molecules exist in a particular planet and would be useful to determine the existence of exotic compounds. Additionally, sprites would give information on the conductivity of the atmosphere of a particular planet.
